About
Nicholas Wong is an honours student at the University of New South Wales pursuing Actuarial Science and Mathematics (Statistics) and a Christian with a guiding passion to bring the “alphabet with which God has written the universe” (Galileo) into the broader world.
Born in Kuala Lumpur, and raised in the beautiful city of Sydney, Nicholas graduated from Cherrybrook Technology High School in 2019 under Eddie Woo and Miriam Lees who served as the foundations upon which he developed a love for the subject. Graduating first in mathematics at his school, he went on to study at the University of Sydney in Mathematics, and switched to the University of New South Wales for a focus in actuarial sciences, making the rigorous mathematical concepts grounded in the world of finance. It was there he discovered the world of quantitative finance, where rigorous mathematics was being used to better understand risk and returns in using methods such as stochastic processes, statistical machine learning and Bayesian inference. He has completed a wide range of projects ranging from insurance pricing using statistical learning methods in R to implementing portfolio management with the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) framework. While primarily having worked in R, he has learnt Python and implemented numerical methods for solving stochastic differential equations such as Black-Scholes for options pricing.
In 2025, Nicholas will be undertaking an honours in statistics with the research focus on partial differential equation (PDE) model emulation using cutting edge neural network approaches such as Fourier Neural Operators. His work will delve into their theoretical properties, contributing to the foundation of this emerging field. Looking forwards, he aims to pursue a PhD in mathematics and forge a career in quantitative finance, where his skills, passion and excellence will bridge the distance between academia and industry.
Apart from academic pursuits, Nicholas’ breadth of interest extends beyond mathematics and concerns areas such as philosophy, having undertaken courses at the University of Sydney in metaphysics, ethics and aesthetics, as well as poker, chess and volleyball. He has been involved in leading creative and logistic teams for a large local church, with a mission to inspire the next generation to aim higher and to build deeper.
